Volkswagen is going full force with its goal to take over Toyota as the world’s largest automaker. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen may sell a record 7 million vehicles worldwide in 2010, reducing the sales gap with Toyota to just over 1 million units from 1.5 million units last year.

During the first 9 months of 2010, Volkswagen Group’s seven brands increased sales to 5.4 million cars to 12.7 percent.

“With their booming sales in China, surprisingly strong volumes in the U.S. and big share gains in Europe outside Germany, it could be possible VW will sell over 7 million units this year,” said Max Warburton, a Bernstein Research auto analyst in London.

Through September, Volkswagen sales in Europe increased to 2.5 million units, or 1.1 percent. China sales jumped a whopping 39 percent to 1.5 million units, while U.S. sales were up 21 percent to 267,500 units.

The German automaker’s sales chief, Christian Klingler, said at the 2010 Paris Motor Show that the company may hit its goal of 10 million unit sales before 2018. Volkswagen is aiming to take over Toyota’s sales lead by 2018.
